What is The Passport Photo Project?

The Passport Photo Project (PPP) is a socially engaged art project conceptualized and designed by Vivek Vellanki. Through a collaborative process Vivek invites you to transform the passport photo into an object that tells your story of migration in your unique way.

Who can participate in The Passport Photo Project?

Anybody who identifies as an immigrant, refugee, or international student is welcome to participate in the project. There are no age restrictions and it is free of cost to participate.

What do I have to do in order to participate?

All you have to do is come to the location of the session. If you have a copy of your passport photo, feel free to bring it. Otherwise, Vivek will create and print your passport photo at a much larger size (13*19 inches). You will then draw, write, collage, paint, or transform this image in any way that you choose. Vivek will provide all the materials and a prompt to work with.

What will I get from participating in the project?

The goal is to make space for you to be in conversation with other immigrants and refugees, to create art, and to share your story. For previous collaborators, the opportunity to reflect on their journeys and to transform the passport photo into their story has been powerful and transformative. Along with the experience of making art and connecting with others, you will receive a copy of the artwork you create and invitations to any exhibitions that are held. There will also be some light refreshments.

Is there anything that I should be concerned about?

As an immigrant, Vivek understands that the passport photo is an important identification document. While the art you make might still make you identifiable, you have complete control over whether or not this is shared with the broader public. Vivek will also ask you whether you want to use a pseudonym, your actual name, or remain anonymous.

Can I invite my friends/peers/family members?

Yes, absolutely! Please do share this with others who might be interested. If you know of any organization/community that would be interested to organize a dedicated art-making session for them, please reach out to Vivek (vivek.vellanki@gmail.com).

Who can I reach out to with additional questions?

If you have any other questions, concerns, or suggestions, please email Vivek (vivek.vellanki@gmail.com). Vivek is an artist/educator. He currently lives and works in Bloomington, Indiana.
