Join us at Pictura Gallery from 6:30 - 7pm on Friday, September 4th for a conversation and Q+A with photographer, Osamu James Nakagawa and IU professor of American studies, Karen M. Inouye.

They will discuss the implications of forced incarceration during WWII from both a historical and personal perspective, in the context of Nakagawa’s new body of work, TRACE.

Karen Inouye earned her Ph.D. in American Studies from Brown University and is a Professor in the Department of American Studies at Indiana University. Her book, The Long Afterlife of Nikkei Wartime Incarceration reexamines the history of imprisonment of U.S. and Canadian citizens of Japanese descent during World War II. Inouye explores how historical events can linger in individual and collective memory and then crystallize in powerful moments of political engagement.

Osamu James Nakagawa is a Professor of Photography at Indiana University and a recipient of the 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship, the 2010 Higashikawa New Photographer of the Year and 2015 Sagamihara Photographer of the Year in Japan.

His new series TRACE is currently featured in a solo exhibition at Pictura Gallery.
