Pictura Gallery

Emilia Martin | Opening weekend

November 13, 2025

Emilia Martin joined us in Bloomington from the Netherlands for the opening reception of her exhibition at Pictura, and she traveled with a generous grant from STROOM Den Haag. Martin met with the university photography students and gave a fascinating talk to our community about her process, and the many stories and points of inspiration behind the project.

If it weren’t enough to have Emilia’s magnetic presence in the room, there are also several actual meteorites on display, thanks to Indiana University’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

We’ve sold out of our copies of the book, I saw a tree bearing stones in the place of apples and pears. But you can still see the copy on display, and all the other intriguing objects and images in the show, on view until the end of January.

KIDS WORKSHOP

Saturday morning following the opening, the gallery hosted a children’s workshop. Kids and caregivers worked on an Eye Spy, discovering items hidden within Emilia’s photographs. Afterwards, Emilia shared stories about specific rocks in her pictures and the inspiration behind the photographs, and the kids chose an image from the series to tell their own stories about. After some creative storytelling, Ms. Hilary led the group in a rock knotting craft where kids (and adults) adopted a rock to wrap, decorate and take home!
